“It’s been two weeks since my dad died and I’m still single!”

Viral Instagram & Tumblr Account

Problem

My dad died.

I was very single.

You can’t go on Tinder while you’re grieving.

Or can you?

Surely, I’m not the first person to navigate dating while while also navigating loss.

If I find a way to laugh at my situation, can I help other people find humor in theirs?

Solution & Impact

After a long talk with my closest friends (and my therapist), I updated my Tinder bio to: “I’m a comedian. My dad just died.”

Since guys aren’t known for reading bios, I also made sure to tell all my Tinder matches who messaged me that my dad just died.

I posted screenshots of our exchanges to Instagram and Tumblr with their identifying info masked. I used the post copy to make it clear that I was using this account to laugh at myself—the lady who became preoccupied with dating immediately after her dad died.

Within two posts, the account was picked up by EliteDaily and went viral. It was covered in international press, and featured in Cosmo, The Washington Post, and more.

But most importantly, my inbox became full of amazing messages from people who identified with my experience and could finally laugh at one of life’s worst situations.
